Changing
the theme and colors of GNOME/GTK2 in Ubuntu.
This theme decides the look-and-feel of all windows and menus.
1) Download
a suitable theme from http://gnome-look.org or http://www.ubuntu-art.org
Follow the GTK 2.x or GTK
Themes... links.
Choose a theme
and save it in to your home folder.
Save the entire
xxx.tar.gz file as is. Do not unpack (unzip) it.
For example I
prefer the mild Ubuntu
industrial theme...
This dusty
theme... theme is also nice.

2) Then open the
Appearance dialog from System
-> Preferences -> Appearance menu.

3) Then load the
new theme.
Press the
[Install...] button and pick the theme file (xxx.tar.gz).

You can also drag & drop the theme file (xxx.tar.gz)
onto the dialog.
The new theme takes effect immediately.
4) Changing the
icon
theme.
You can
similarly change the icon-theme. Just download icon-themes from the
above mensioned
websites
and drag & drop the theme to the dialog (or use the [Install...]
button).

The icon theme in the
picture is called SudUbuntu (link...).
You can later press the [Customize...] button to choose a different
icon theme.

Login window has its own theme.
The login window is called GDM...
or the GNOME Display Manager.
1) Again, download
suitable themes from http://gnome-look.org or http://www.ubuntu-art.org
Look under "GDM Themes" link.

has also some nice GDM themes.
Save the theme file as it is. Do not unpack (or unzip) it. Just save it
to your home folder.

2) Then start the "Login Window Preferences" dialog from System -> Administration -> Login
Window menu.

3) Select the [Local] tab and click the [+ Add] button to load a new
theme.

Click the radiobutton in the left-most column to activate the theme.

4) Then logout / in
to admire your new login-window theme.
